Know Your Zone for the 2013 Hurricane Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Thursday, May 23, 2013) - Governor Nikki Haley has proclaimed May 26- June 1 to be 2013 South Carolina Hurricane Awareness Week.  The S.C. Emergency Management Division and the National Weather Service urge citizens to take time now to prepare for disasters by reviewing their family emergency plans and developing a disaster supplies kit.

SCEMD encourages everyone living near or visiting the coast to “Know Your Zone” in case a hurricane prompts an evacuation.  Visit the “Know Your Zone” section at to use an interactive map showing new, color-coded coastal evacuation zones, routes and links to county emergency management pages with detailed hurricane evacuation information.

The 2013 South Carolina Hurricane Guide will be available starting Saturday, June 1, the beginning of the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season.  The S.C. Hurricane Guide will be in 11 coastal newspapers on June 1 and will be available for download at

The Guide is valid only for the 2013 hurricane season, which lasts from June 1 through November 30.  SCEMD has compiled important information that people can use before, during and after hurricane threats.  Preparation information includes lists of suggested safety and convenience items, evacuation routes, key broadcast stations; useful websites, animal care resources, and updated maps of vulnerable coastal areas.

As part of Hurricane Awareness Week, the Hurricane Guide is being distributed via subscription and rack sales Saturday in The Beaufort Gazette, Bluffton Today, the Charleston Post and Courier, the Hilton Head Island Packet, the Sumter Item, the Florence Morning News, and the Orangeburg Times and Democrat, the Georgetown Times, the Waccamaw Times, the Inlet Outlet and the Myrtle Beach Sun News.
