Columbia, S.C. –  The South Carolina Emergency Management Division is supporting a state-wide response to the impacts to South Carolina from Hurricane Helene. SCEMD urges all South Carolinians to take immediate safety precautions, and to stay off the roadways if they do not have to travel.

The National Hurricane Center reports that tropical storm-force winds are covering the entire state. As Helene continues to move northward, high winds and flooding are all expected through the remainder of the morning.

"This is a dangerous situation, and we urge everyone to heed warnings and follow emergency instructions from state and local authorities," said Kim Stenson, Director of SCEMD.

As storm conditions continue, SCEMD urges all South Carolinians to take immediate safety precautions:

Stay Off the Roads: Travel is highly discouraged during this time, as severe weather, including flooding and hazardous winds, poses significant risks. High winds have caused downed trees, power lines and debris in roadways and in some areas traffic signals are currently not working.

Report Power Outages: Residents are encouraged to report outages directly to their utility provider. Do not approach downed power lines.

People are encouraged to follow official forecasts from the National Hurricane Center, local media, and public safety agencies' social media accounts for the latest information.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division elevated the state's readiness and response to Operating Condition Level One, or OPCON 1 this morning, in response to Helene impacting South Carolina. OPCON 1 ensures the appropriate specific hazard emergency plans are activated and ready should an emergency situation be imminent.
