Clean up effort now underway in areas of South Carolina impacted by Tropical Storm Debby

State and local agencies continue to assess the full extent of damage caused by Tropical Storm Debby as response crews across South Carolina continue to clear roads of trees and debris in hard-hit area.

Residents can help with clean-up efforts by using the Damage Assessment tool in the SC Emergency Manager mobile app to report any damage to their property.

As property owners and renters begin their disaster recovery efforts, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division encourages them to remember these tips:

  • Document damage for your insurance claim and file it before starting clean-up efforts. Take pictures and save receipts.
  • Remove and discard items that cannot be washed or disinfected.
  • Consult with your local waste management for trash and debris disposal options.
    • Crisis Cleanup is a non-profit organization coordinating local volunteers to help with storm recovery efforts. For free help with debris cleanup and removal, call 1-844-965-1386.
  • Most common household cleaning supplies can be used. Follow the directions listed on the label.
  • Thoroughly clean all hard surfaces that had contact with storm surge or floodwaters.
  • Stay away from dangling power lines. Be careful when clearing fallen trees, as they may have wires tangled in them.
  • Wear sturdy shoes or boots, protective eyewear, a helmet, and work gloves to protect yourself from debris.
  • Keep a first aid kit close by for minor cuts and scrapes. Seek medical attention for serious injuries.
